DNA MUTATION
DNA MUTATION”DNA Mutation” is an eight foot tall Cedar structure with a slotted base. The title is referential, inspired by the plethora of images of DNA in varied and fascinating patterns. The surface is treated with 3 coats of a steel impregnated liquid. That black surface is then sprayed with an activator. The ensuing chemical reactions turned the surface into a patina emulating rusted steel. The sculpture weighs 16 lbs. +- The base weight 22 lbs. +-

"Ripples" Interior Sculpture ($3,700)
"Ripples" Interior Sculpture ($3,700) Ripples is a response to Wag… a piece I recently sold. Wag seemed so obvious and simple but as it occupied my living room for several months, it’s exceptional grace and power grew with each passing day. Ripples is a complementary response to Wag and also possesses the same characteristics of grace & power exemplified by its sister piece Wag.

"DETROIT" Interior Sculpture ($4,650)
"DETROIT" Interior Sculpture ($4,650)This piece was a real departure and I can’t conjure why or how it came about. I had little faith in where it was going as I continued to cut, file and sand. As I applied the final touches and chemically introduced the finish it seemed to, not only come to life as a startlingly powerful piece of sculpture, but also soothed my angst that I had wasted a whole lot of time and in particular… energy. Since Detroit was a bitch to build.

"Chenango" Interior Sculpture ($4,750)
"Chenango" Interior Sculpture ($4,750)Chenango refers to the river that runs through Binghamton, N.Y... where I grew up. I could have titled this piece Susquehanna, which also runs through Binghamton but I liked the sound of Chenango better. The channel that meanders through this Cedar Plank is referential. It is a slice of Geography although not specific. Chenango includes a removable base. The bottom 18” of the sculpture easily slides into the slotted base.

"Hoodoo' Interior Sculpture ($7,200)
"Hoodoo' Interior Sculpture ($7,200)This sculpture is based on a simple twist. One part of the twist remains unaffected while the other half goes through significant organic metamorphosis. The title refers to the influence that seeing the rock spires found throughout the Badlands and Colorado plateau had on my work. The actual Hoodoo's were inspirational and provided a starting point for my interpretive forms. The varied sized holes allow the background to intersect the work. This piece has a mysterious quality... quite like the Hoodoo rock formations out west. Hoodoo comes with a removable base. The bottom 18” of the sculpture easily slides into the slotted base.

"Maasdam" Interior Installation ($3,910)
"Maasdam" Interior Installation ($3,910) The title Maasdam comes from Maasdam cheese... a Swiss style cheese made in the Netherlands. The internal voids or holes are a part of the ripening process. This sculpture pays tribute to the positive negative interaction found in Maasdam cheese. The balance between the positive elements and the negative voids creates an intriguing interaction between negative and positive space. The final configuration was developed from small thumbnail sketches… eventually transitioning to a full-scale template. Maasdam includes a removable base. The bottom 18” of the sculpture easily slides into the slotted base.

"Precarious" Interior Sculpture ($5,250)
"Precarious" Interior Sculpture ($5,250)Precarious was inspired by a spectacular shadow that appeared on the wall at George’s Fish House here in Sarasota while we were having lunch. The lunch was just okay but I was certain that the sketch of the shadows was pure gold. The idea of a gradually falling shape (I pictured a Mango) falling end over end, incrementally from top to bottom was captivating. My 7.5” x 96” format ideally fit the tumbling concept of implied kinetic movement. I love the piece… from concept to construction to completion. The piece is colored with wood stains prior to the application of the 4 coats of Pro Urethane. Precarious comes with a 18" tall base. The piece slides easily into the slotted base.

"Argyle" Interior Sculpture ($4,900)
"Argyle" Interior Sculpture ($4,900)Argyle is based on repetition and acute angles. It has a stately presence and is systematic with geometric underpinnings. Argyle has an unexplained unanticipated power… almost an iconic feel. The top of the sculpture not only defines the conclusion of Argyle but it likely adds to the iconic sense of the work. The top returns the piece to a horizontal vertical format, countering the rest of the piece while powerfully pulling it all together. It turns out to be a surprising piece of structural strength. It might well be an architectural proposal for a skyscraper. Argyle has an undeniable presence, power, and majesty emanating from within. Argyle includes a removable base. The bottom 18” of the sculpture easily slides into the slotted base.

"Spinal Column" Interior Sculpture ($4,950)
"Spinal Column" Interior Sculpture ($4,950)The 5 regions of the vertebrae... cervical, thoracic, lumbar, sacrum, and coccyx have nothing to do with this piece. This is my interpretation of elements that line up vertically… one on top of one another reminiscent of a backbone. The intervals that wrap around the core seem to fit the intervals and connectivity of a spine. Spinal Column includes a removable base. The bottom 18” of the sculpture easily slides into the slotted base.

"Roto Zip" Interior Sculpture ($5,600)
"Roto Zip" Interior Sculpture ($5,600)Winged Victory, with its sweeping angular extensions, owes its vitality to the Hellenistic sculpture called Nike of Samothrace. There is a certain tension and an implication that the Hellenistic sculpture is about to take off. My sculpture acts as a counterbalance from the feeling of an upward thrust with an equal dynamism that the movement might just as well be down. Like a drill or auger penetrating the earth. Winged Victory includes a removable base. The bottom 18” of the sculpture easily slides into the slotted base.

"Wayward Chain" Interior Sculpture ($4,900)
"Wayward Chain" Interior Sculpture ($4,900)Stepped Structure is intended to be an architectural suggestion. One side is perfectly straight. As a result it exists perpendicular to the proposed flat urban environment. The other side is made up of perfectly proportioned and equally sized steps leading to the top. Thus referencing the stepped pyramids of ancient Egypt. The structure is really narrow. Like 40' at full scale. It should be built in the middle of Central Park. Stepped Structure includes a removable base. The bottom 18” of the sculpture easily slides into the slotted base.

"Nine" Interior Sculpture ($4,750)
"Nine" Interior Sculpture ($4,750)Nine is cut from an eight foot Cedar plank. It is painted with a steel impregnated paint that, once subject to several chemical applications... it looks like rusted steel. Planting bulbs in our ever-needy grade inspired this particular piece. Nine includes a removable base. The bottom 18” of the sculpture easily slides into the slotted base.

"Pablo" Interior Sculpture ($3,700)
"Pablo" Interior Sculpture ($3,700)Pablo was clearly influenced by Pablo Picasso. The piece was cut in half vertically just above half way to the top. The cut began at the focal point of the piece and at the intersection of a 45-degree cut that bifurcated the piece. The spirited part was then slide down meet the center of the base. This piece is a departure from most of my work. It was an experiment that had considerable success opened future experimental possibilities. Pablo includes a removable base. The bottom 18” of the sculpture easily slides into the slotted base.

"Steel Tree" Interior Sculpture ($3,910)
"Steel Tree" Interior Sculpture ($3,910)This perfectly normal tree has experienced some devastating catastrophic calamity. Its metabolic make-up has turned it to rusted steel. It still retains a certain organic elegance. Steel Tree includes a removable base. The bottom 18” of the sculpture easily slides into the slotted base.

"Hydraulic" Interior Sculpture ($3,910)
"Hydraulic" Interior Sculpture ($3,910)This represents another piece that I lived with for a while and liked less and less over time. It title was Escher Staircase... inspired by M.C. Escher's fantastic drawings. I had created an upside down actual staircase. There were few actual changes that were physically feasible but making the steps into half ovals seemed to make sense. Also, creating a flat transition from one element to the next thereby created a stop and go end and beginning all at once. The piece works spectacularly well now. The sense or upward movement shifted from a staircase to a lifting movement. That movement powered by hydraulics.

"Hammerhead" Interior Sculpture ($3,910)
"Hammerhead" Interior Sculpture ($3,910)Hammerhead is an imposing piece. It might be viewed as a horticultural oddity... with growth around the edges that increase as this strange plant grows up. I prefer to place it the realm of heraldry. A weapon long since abandoned yet swung by some very big guys in days long ago and far away. It has the presence of a 14th century weapon. Hammerhead includes a removable base. The bottom 18” of the sculpture easily slides into the slotted base.

"Undertow" Interior Sculpture ($4,750)
"Undertow" Interior Sculpture ($4,750)This piece was created in response to an earlier piece called Chenango. Chenango had a channel that ran through the center of a solid 8" X 7.5" Cedar plank. I decided to eliminate the outer edges of the plank and cut back to the contours of the channel. It worked. Undertow comes with a removable base. The bottom 18” of the sculpture easily slides into the slotted base

"Wag" Interior Sculpture ($4,750)
"Wag" Interior Sculpture ($4,750)This, for me, is a beautifully elegant piece of sculpture. The balance, the simplicity, the rhythmic flow, the proportions, the bold positive presence, the rusted steel surface (visually and tactilely), and the pure drama of Wag......... are sculptural perfection. Wag comes with a removable base. The bottom 18” of the sculpture easily slides into the slotted base.
